John Henry Newman’s ‘Campaign in Ireland’: The Academic and Pastoral Vision of the Catholic University

7.00

It is an honour to be asked to speak about the Catholic University in the very building where the first lectures were delivered in November 1854 and where the first students resided. I am grateful to the Newman Centres at UCD and Notre Dame for inviting me to speak. What I have to say draws largely on the university papers of St John Henry Newman that were posthumously printed for private circulation in 1896 under the title My Campaign in Ireland, Part I. It was my good fortune to be asked to edit this volume, which was published (for the first time) two years ago. Urged by my publisher to explain why the collection was called ‘Part I’ led me to discover the contents of Part II; that was published last year.
